RAGBRAI Day 3: A Cycling Odyssey Through Iowa's Heart
The Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride in Iowa (RAGBRAI) is a cycling event that has captivated enthusiasts for 53 years, and Day 3 is a testament to its enduring appeal. This segment, spanning 61.1 miles from Guthrie Center to Boone, offers a unique blend of scenic beauty, historical significance, and community spirit.
One of the highlights of Day 3 is its route's parallel to the Raccoon River Valley Trail, a 72-mile paved loop that has become a favorite among local cyclists. This trail, interconnected with the High Trestle Trail, forms a more than 120-mile loop, providing a diverse and exhilarating riding experience. The route's proximity to Des Moines, the state's largest city, showcases the impact of RAGBRAI in fostering a thriving cycling culture and infrastructure.
Panora, the first town on the route, is a charming lake town with a vibrant square. As riders pedal out of Perry, they can't help but imagine it's February, when the Bike Ride to Rippey (BRR) takes place. The midpoint bonfire and the generosity of locals, offering free chili and home-brewed beer, create a sense of camaraderie and adventure. Ogden's Community Methodist Church offers a playful respite with a Slip-N-Slide on its lawn, adding a touch of fun to the journey.
The route then descends to cross the Des Moines River, followed by a challenging hill climb, leading to Boone, a historic railroad town. Boone's attractions include the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad, offering rail tours with panoramic views, and the Rail Explorers, where riders can pedal-power a rail car across a tall bridge. The town's amenities include local favorites like the Whistle Stop Cafe, Jimmy's Barbecue Pit, and Dutch Oven Bakery.
